Big shapes from a reference

Layout and arrangement often come more easily than recalling objects. Start there.

Steps to follow:

  1. Pick a reference photo of a scene.
  2. Spend five minutes tracing or sketching only the large shapes and where they sit in the frame.
  3. Cover the reference and redraw the same arrangement using a different set of simple shapes.
  4. Uncover it and compare placement, not detail.
  5. Add three flat color blocks. Stop before adding anything fine.
  6. Note whether the layout or the objects felt harder.
